Monahan Estate - Lovedale, Hunter Valley

Low Preservative / Low Allergy Wines

Monahan Wines is a boutique vineyard in the Hunter Valley growing flavourful high-quality grapes that are made into table wines of the utmost purity. Recognition for our wines has resulted in a number of awards: Gold, Silver and Bronze.

We have a specific focus on making low-allergy (hypo-allergic) wines. We know that a percentage of the population suffers from wine allergies, with common symptoms being headaches, heart palpitations, asthma, facial flushing, sinusitis, and fatigue. This is generally due to the natural and man-made compounds found in wine. We feel strongly about living in a world that is environmentally sensible, and producing healthier wines for those who appreciate the difference.

Our wines are made with a minimum of allergic additives. One of those allergic additives is sulphites, which is also known as Preservative 220 or Sulphur Dioxide.

The chart below shows the maximum levels of sulphites in our wines. Sulphites are measured in 'parts per million' or ppm. In most countries a bottle of champagne can have up to 350ppm which is why some champagne can make you feel ill. Fortunately, most good champagne would be well below these maximums. Table wines can have up to 250ppm of sulphites added, and at that level a sensitive person can have a nasty reaction after just one glass. Organic wines have a limit of 125ppm in Australia which is better.

Monahan has reduced these levels even further, and our 'Low Preservative' white wines have a maximum of 85ppm, and our 'Low Preservative' red wine has a maximum of 60ppm, as shown in the graph below:

Max Sulphite Levels table

All our wines since 2007 have reduced sulphites. However, our wines marked 'Low Preservative' have even lower levels of sulphites.

Of course, sulphites are only one of the causes of wine allergies. You will learn more about low-allergy wines throughout this website.

We are often asked whether our wines 'can be stored' like other wines, and do they taste different. Please join our free newsletter for updates on our wines, trends in low preservative wine and specials by clicking on the following link: Newsletter.
